Our Alumni Spotlight shines on Gavin Washington, a proud alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle. We sat down with Gavin as he reflected on the time spent as a "Club Kid" and the lasting impact it has had on his life. From playing ping pong in the game room to becoming a successful realtor and youth sports coach, Gavin's story is a testament to the transformative power of the Boys & Girls Club.

Growing Up at the Club

Gavin’s journey with the Boys & Girls Club began in his elementary school years when his mom enrolled him in summer camps and subsequently after-school programs. As a child, his mom worked two jobs to support Gavin and his brother, and the Boys & Girls Club became a second home. “It was instant fun, and I knew it was the place to be,” Gavin shares. Whether it was playing youth basketball, hanging out with friends, or spending time in the game room, the Club provided him with a safe, welcoming environment.

Some of his fondest memories include hours spent in the game room, where he and his friends played everything from pool to board games to video games. The Club also introduced him to new interests, like chess and checkers. Gavin notes, "The Boys & Girls Club helped me make friends."

Life-Changing Impact

The Boys & Girls Club also provided Gavin with valuable life skills that continue to serve him today. Through group activities and projects, he honed his communication and people skills, while learning the importance of time management. The Club leaders, like Mr. David and Mr. Carlton, were influential role models who helped Gavin explore new activities like martial arts and sports.

One of the most impactful lessons he learned at the Club was the importance of hard work and resilience. "The Club showed me that success is not defined by where we come from, but by the work we put in and the choices we make," said Gavin. These lessons have carried into his adult life, as he navigates his career and gives back to the community.

Lifelong Friendships and Giving Back

For Gavin, the Boys & Girls Club was also the place where he formed lifelong friendships with people like Monte Wilson, Chris Burg Jr., and Sean Glenn. Many of the leaders and staff at the Club are still in his life today, including Mrs. Stacie and Ms. Amber. Gavin also learned some of the most lasting lessons were the ones that Coach Chris Burg taught him. Coach Chris had a calm demeanor with high expectations. While Coach Burg is no longer with us, his way of connecting with Gavin and all the Club members of that generation was special. These relationships are a testament to the lasting community the Boys & Girls Club fosters amongst its members.

Today, Gavin continues to give back by volunteering as a youth sports coach and mentoring the next generation. His experience at the Club has inspired him to support his community and help young people find positive outlets in sports. He even carries forward the lessons of time management he learned at the Club, now passing them on to his own children.

Words of Wisdom for Future Club Kids

Gavin’s message to current and future Club kids is simple but powerful:

"Don’t let your current circumstances determine your future."

Coming from a hard-working family and facing personal challenges, including a cancer diagnosis, Gavin knows firsthand the importance of resilience. "Life will knock you down several times, but it's how you respond to adversity that will determine your overall outcome."

Gavin offered the following advice to anyone considering joining the Boys & Girls Club:

"Do it! Don’t hesitate!"

The Club was not only a place of fun but a cornerstone of his personal growth and success.

A Future with the Boys & Girls Club

Gavin's connection to the Boys & Girls Club remains strong, and he looks forward to staying involved in the future. He has already volunteered by adopting a family from the Club for Christmas, and he is eager to continue supporting the Club however he can.

Gavin Washington’s journey from Club Kid to community leader is a shining example of the impact the Boys & Girls Club can have on a young person's life. His story is a reminder that the Club is not just a place to have fun, but also a place to build valuable life skills.
